Island Cup U17 Boys Rep B Winners

The Nanaimo Pactow Predators played for the Island Cup final in Comox on April 30th against Juan de Fuca. In the first half Nanaimo started out slow but started to come out with a strong defence to keep the forwards on the attack but Juan de Fuca came out scoring first in the half and the score would remain that through the first half. In the second half the Pactow Predators came out even stronger and with great defence and mid field support Bryce Crigger was able to put one past the Victoria keeper and the game would end in a 1-1 tie. The game went straight to shoot out with Tyler Cameron in goal for Nanaimo and after keeping it a 1 goal game he was going to be put through the test. Nanaimo had Sean Salloum, Shane Smith, Philip Laffin, Brendan Milholm and Sonny Hill take the penalty shots. The firist shots for both teams scored and then Victoria went ahead after the second shot and on the third shot Nanaimo tied it up and fourth shot Nanaimo went ahead and we just needed the last shooters ball to go in to win and Nanaimo found the back of the net. Nanaimo won the shoot out 4 2. I am also including team photo with the cup that the Nanaimo Pactow Predators won the order of names for the picture are back row from left to right Philip Laffin, Sean Salloum,Nolan Maughan, Jasper Gilmour,Brendan Milholm,Ryan Streifel, Tyler Cameron, Shane Smith, Kulveer Parhar, Sam Wilson. Nanaimo United Come Out on Top at Gordon Head Jamboree

The Nanaimo United U-15 boys soccer team had a very successful time in Victoria at the weekend comfortably winning the U-15 boys Silver category by winning all four of their games at the Gordon Head Jamboree. They opened up against the local outfit, the Gordon Head Peles, and scored after only ten seconds when Andrew Przada netted. Will Fitzgerald put United up 2-0 before the half and further goals from Gavin Leung, Rod Horsland, and Trevor Thompson and a consolation goal from Gordon Head gave the final 5-1 score. In the afternoon United took on the Port Moody Titans and were quickly 1-0 up when Horsland converted his own rebound. Nanaimo increased their lead soon after when Thompson produced a nice shot to easily beat the keeper. A very athletic Port Moody team refused to give up and United failed to score any more from that point on despite creating numerous chances giving the final score of 2-0. On Sunday Nanaimo were up against Pemberton United who fought gamely and kept Nanaimo off the scoreboard for almost twenty minutes until Billy Crawshaw produced a great shot on the turn in the box to put his team up 1-0. Within ten minutes Nanaimo scored three more times from Colin Macdonald, Horsland and Przada to make the score 4-0 at the half. Early in the second half Pemberton pulled one back when the Nanaimo defence went missing but Nanaimo soon restored their four goal lead when Thompson set up Mike Meanwell on a break and he coolly converted. Trevor Short rounded out the scoring when he fired in a nice shot off the post to give the final score of 6-1. Nanaimo’s final game was against the Gordon Head Rebels and they went 1-0 up after only two minutes when Horsland finished off a nice run with a great shot. Three minutes later Marino Best shot in to make it 2-0. Nanaimo increased their lead to 4-0 through goals from Macdonald and Horsland before Gordon head were awarded a penalty for a foul in the box which they converted to make it 4-1 at the half. Nanaimo continued to dominate in the second half and scored three more times from Horsland, Fitzgerald and Thompson to finish 7-1 winners. On a sour note Thompson was sent off for repeatedly fouling his opponents despite given ample warning from the referee.

Lightning Strikes Hard in Victoria

In what was to be one of the strongest finishes of the 165 teams in the Victoria Gordon Head Soccer tournament, the Nanaimo “Lightning” U14 Rep Girls soccer team had a clean sweep to the Gold. Shutting out all of the opposing teams with 2/0, 2/0, 4/0 and 1/0 victories, the team played extremely hard and it paid off. Although playing hard and winning is always a main focus, having the players enjoy their team members and having fun is equally important in keeping them involved and respectful. This was very evident as one of the highlights “off the pitch” was a mini tour on a chartered double deck bus to head off to cheer on the Nanaimo “Delicado’s” U14 Rep boys. After taking gold in the Victoria Lakehill tourney last fall, and gold from last weekends Gordon Head tourney, the team will be off to Salt Spring in May with their eye’s set on a repeat of last years gold medal victory, finishing off a gold medal season. Thanks to our sponsors Coastal Community Credit Union, Loy and Rongve, Stop Management Systems, B. Whales Trucking Cascade Excavating and Cavallotti Lodge for supporting youth soccer and our team. Also thanks to the Gordon Head Soccer association for putting on such a well run tourney. Congratulations to the four boys teams from Nanaimo who also brought home gold.

Intersport United U13 Rep A girls win provincial A cup Qualifier

Nanaimo Intersport United U13 girls out dueled host Cordova Bay in a captivating shoot out win in the Vancouver Island Regional A Cup Championship. The game was hosted by the L.I.S.A representative on March 25th @ Lochside Park in Victoria before a large crowd and the fans were not dissapointed. Cordova Bay got off to a strong start out pacing Nanaimo for the first part of the game. Nanaimo then began to control the game, out chancing and outworking Cordova Bay through the rest of regulation time. Nanaimos forwards were a threat up front all game pressuring Cordova Bays defence. Saisha McNiel was a standout with her tireless effort. If not for the solid play of Cordova Bays keeper Nanaimo would have had a goal or two for their efforts. One of the keys to the teams success was the play of Nanaimos midfielders whom subbed in and out because of the positions workload. Their hard work in shorter shifts gave Nanaimo the advantage in pressure and possession. Nanaimos back 4 were solid all game helping Christine Morrison earn 110 minutes of shutout soccer. Two 10 min overtimes decided nothing as well with Nanaimo carrying the play and coming close on several occassions. A shootout would be needed. The shootout was nothing short of thrilling. It took a total of 16 shooters to decide the issue. Scoring for Nanaimo were, Brianna Nielsen, Krista Whittaker, Kerys Malli, Jaimie Smythe, and the decisive pressure filled strike belonged to Sarah Johnson, Nanaimos 8th shooter, giving Nanaimo the victory, the Island Championship and the right to represent Vancouver Island At the Provincial Championships in Kamloops in July. WAY TO GO SARAH!!! Congratulations girls! You earned and deserved that result. Thanks for a thrilling afternoon of soccer, from the Coaching staff and all the parents. GO UNITED!

Nanaimo Boys U-16 Thunder -
News of a great season

The team is unheralded and has quietly thundered along in their play in Upper Island Soccer.  The boys ranging in age from 14 to 15 years of age have been together for just under 2 years now.  Last year they had a fairly successful year and this year they are quietly building an even better year.  Building better by way of going undefeated so far!  Early in the season the boys played in their age group however they proved to be a very powerful side and easily managed to earn victories in all of their matches against the island boys at their age group.

In November the boys were pushed up to play with the older sides in Upper Island Soccer.  In all of their outings they managed to play some sound soccer utilizing their speed and passing abilities to be victorious over all of the older boys (U 17 and U 18) that they have played against.  This past Sunday was no exception when the boys managed a solid 1- 0 victory over the U18 Ladysmith boys in their last league game.

In the November Island Cup tournament they equated themselves very well going undefeated in play.  They did meet two teams that took them to task and made them work.  They were able to prevail over a very capable Campbell River team by a score of 2 to 1; a score that did not indicate the overall play in the game, the Campbell River keeper was very solid in his performance.  The second team they met that made things tough on the squad was from Courtenay.  The boys after playing a tough first match met the boys from Courtenay who were fresh and playing their first game of the day.  The Nanaimo Thunder came away with a tie.  In the end they sent their congratulations to the Courtenay boys as they won the tournament by virtue of having a better goal differential record then theirs.

As the season comes to a close the boys have continued their winning ways, this past week they won the last cup game for North Island and have now won the right to represent the North Island in Island play.  As a result they are off to Sydney BC, to play Peninsula for the right to represent the Island at the Provincial's later this summer.

The boys will be looking to continue the efforts and their journey representing Nanaimo in the New Year

Nanaimo Girls U-17 Thunder

Nanaimo Thunder U-17 girls won play-off game Sunday up in Comox 1-0. Katie Durvin scored off a corner kick with less than 15 minutes to go. Kaitlyn Black made several key saves during the match and Kendra Bajkov was very solid in defence. Coach Brian Durvin is very proud of the effort from all his players!
The Thunder now meet the South Island rep on Sunday March 5th. The game is tenatively booked at Merle Logan at 4PM.

A Look Back...

Not all the good news has made it into our website. We had teams make it all the way to the BC Provincial Cup and teams making us proud at the tournaments they attend. We even had our own board members getting out on the fields for a challenging game of 5-aside! To all those players and coaches, we may get behind on the news page but we are just as proud of your acomplishments!

Regardless, here is a look back at some of the news that should have been shown that we missed....A Look Back
